TikTok Just Made Comments a Whole New Content Opportunity: Should Your Small Business Be Using Voice Comments and Photo Carousels?

TikTok has just announced a big shake up of its comment section, and it is worth small business owners paying attention.

Rolling out globally over the coming month, the platform is introducing four new features: Voice Comments, which let users leave up to a minute of audio directly under a video, Polls, which creators can add to their own videos so followers can vote on up to five options in real time, Photo Carousels, allowing up to nine photos to be uploaded in a single comment rather than one at a time, and Live Photos, a short burst of motion that plays before a still image is shown in full.

In TikTok's own words, they are "bringing that same energy to the comment section" as the main feed, and the intention is clear. The comment section is being turned into an engagement hub in its own right, not just a place people scroll past on their way to the next video.

For small businesses, that opens up some genuinely useful opportunities. Imagine asking your followers to vote on your next product colour using Polls, or inviting customers to reply with a Photo Carousel of how they use your product. Voice Comments could even become a handy, informal way for customers to leave feedback or ask questions without typing a word.

The challenge, as with most new social features, is finding the time to actually use them well. Trying new formats, working out what resonates with your audience, and staying consistent enough to build any real traction takes time, and that is before you have even thought about your actual products or services.

It is very easy for exciting new features like this to pass a small business by simply because there is nobody keeping an eye on them and testing what works.

This is exactly the kind of opportunity that is worth having support for, whether that means someone monitoring new features as they roll out, testing what works for your specific audience, or simply keeping your content calendar ticking along so you can take advantage of trends like this one as they happen, rather than months later once everyone else already has.

If staying on top of every platform update feels like a full time job on top of your actual job, that is because it genuinely is one. At Outlined VA, social media support is one of the things I help small businesses with most, from planning and posting content to keeping an eye on new features like TikTok's revamped comments so you can decide, quickly and confidently, whether they are worth trying for your business. If you would rather focus on running your business and leave the platform watching to someone else, I would love to help.
